Kolkka tables

Let me help you get your home ready for this holiday season.

Worry-free entertaining starts with maintenance free decorating. Young families and busy professionals don’t have time to clean the way our grandmothers did. Durable fabrics, tables that you can wipe clean, and coffee tables that you can put your feet on as well as your food will keep you from being a shrew in your own home.

Table Surfaces

Glass, granite, and hammered brass are a good choice for worry-free table surfaces because they withstand moisture – think wet glasses.

Brand new plastics and resins now come in all different colors and textures. You can toss your coasters in the trash! We love the tables from Kolkka via F.D.O. at the Boston Design Center.  See the images above for examples…

The above choices are modern while there are other more traditional surfaces such as ceramic tile. We useStickley tile top coffee tabled a Mission style Stickley tiled coffee table in our Craftsman Cottage Living Room interior design project.

Sadly wood stains easily and needs to be oiled on a regular basis. It is beautiful but high maintenance. You can get around that by fitting a glass top on the wood to protect the surface.

The durability of fabrics is gauged by how many double rubs it will withstand before it shreds. This test allows the designer to specify the right fabric for the right space. For example a family room that is used by kids and pets needs to withstand a minimum of 15,000 double rubs. That is considered high maintenance. I typically specify fabrics that withstand 40,000 to 200,000 double rubs such as Kravet’s Ultraleather Plus collection. It comes in a variety of colors and textures that suggest leather and animal skins. These fabrics wipe clean with a damp sponge and work well on ottomans and storage coffee tables – no tray needed.

Kravet leather Leather is a traditional, long-lasting material that works great on furnishings. Sometimes it can feel clammy and does need maintenance. Leather is also one of the more expensive coverings.

Kravet velvet fray sunsetAnother one of my favorite fabrics is velvet for comfort and sensual pleasure. Velvet made with Trevira is fade resistant and has a rating of 100,000 double rubs. Velvets can be made of cotton, silk or polyester. You want to avoid silk if you want long-term durability. I often use commercial grade fabrics which are designed for 100 people to sit on each day without showing wear.

Sunbrella indoor/outdoor fabrics have ratings that exceed 50,000 double rubs and are stain, mold and fade resistant. They can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

All fabrics should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. There are companies who will come to your home and clean upholstery, rugs and curtains.

Floor Coverings

The people who sell rugs say that wool rugs are more durable while the people who clean rugs say that polyester rugs are easier to clean. The new synthetic rugs echo the look and feel of high-end wool and cost a fraction of the price. These are a great choice for young families while kids are spilling machines.

Although this is really it’s own topic, there are a myriad of flooring choices that are low maintenance and water proof. Check back for more on this topic.
